Flashes of brilliance from Scott Burgess as he stepped up to the mark for Workington on Sunday, has earned the former amateur star praise from his chairman Dave Bowden.
Burgess stepped into the shoes of the injured play-maker Shaun Lunt in the first quarter of the win over London Skolars at the weekend and showed he has a lot of potential.
The former Great Clifton Lion signed pro forms with Town in December and looks to be ever improving, which delights Bowden.
“Some of his breaks on Sunday were eye catching,” admitted Bowden, who is proud of his club’s commitment to local talent.
“The more he applies himself the better he gets and I think there is still room for him to grow further in the National Leagues.
“I think we can expect more from him which is a credit to the player because he has really applied himself since he joined us and I was delighted to see it come off on the pitch for him.
“The harder he works the more you can see the benefits on the pitch because he is certainly not without talent.”
Burgess, brother of prop Dean, scored in the opening minute of the second half at Derwent Park and he helped to create a number of breaks during the clash.
And Bowden is proud of the fact that this is another local player that the crowd can get behind.
He added: “We need local players, Workington has always had a combination of locals and travellers. All our successful teams in the past had that so it is satisfying to see local lads like Scott come through and the crowd love to see it as well.”
