Ambitious: Ges Ratcliffe

The 42-year-old, who has invested heavily in the town’s football club since getting involved last year, owns the Stoneybeck Inn.

Now he is to be the main sponsor of the rugby union club as they prepare for the 2008/09 season.

Penrith RFUC President Keith Davies said: “We are very pleased that Mr Ratcliffe has agreed to be the main sponsor for the club, particularly as he is so heavily involved with the town’s soccer club.

“His passion is for the round ball game but he was a school boy rugby player and we look forward to seeing him at Winters Park as often as possible.

“Penrith soccer’s impending move to Frenchfield will mean that our facilities will only be a few hundred yards apart”.

Mr Davies added: “I would like to pay tribute to Max Elliott and Adrian Manning who have main sponsored us since 1997. They have stood down this season and I have to say their support over the last 11 years has been absolutely pivotal in our continuing development.”

Ratcliffe, who is a major sponsor at Bolton Wanderers with his Lancashire-based business Debt Matters, moved to live in Cumbria three years ago.

He says he wants to lead Penrith to the Blue Square Premier, formerly the Nationwide Conference.

n Will Skinner is determined to make Guinness Premiership watchers sit up and take notice that Harlequins mean serious business this season.

English rugby’s 22-game domestic marathon – complete with contentious experimental law variations – comes under starter’s orders at Twickenham today when Quins face Saracens and champions Wasps meet London Irish in the London double-header.

Skinner said: “We want to show the rest of the Premiership that we have learned from last year, that we have that little bit more experience and we are going to use it.”
