Superb rugby sevens in Carlisle

THERE may have been the IRB Rugby Sevens taking place in London this weekend, but the real fireworks were at Creighton.

Eleven teams from around the county came and graced the Carlisle-based club and put on a performance of superb rugby sevens. The competition was split into two leagues with Carlisle 1sts and Wigton progressing from one, while Carlisle Colts and Ambleside were top of the other.

In the first semi-final, the two Carlisle teams faced each other. This was a fiery match and there was no holding back between these allies.

The Colts held their own superbly and eventually ran out healthy victors, with Max Connan running in one of eight tries he scored in the tournament.

In the other semi, the surprise package of the day, Ambleside, came up against the formidable Wigton.

Ambleside were short on players due to injury and this lack of substitutions became apparent as Wigton eased to the final, despite a valiant effort from the Lake District outfit.

Carlisle scored first through Matty Shields but were pegged back by the Wigton side which never stopped trying.

Wigton seemed to have more strength in depth and this showed as they started to extend their lead over the young Carlisle side, winning 28-5 with player of the tournament Dan Lafferty excelling for Wigton.

All of the teams involved in the extravaganza can hold their heads high and know that they were all involved in a feast of rugby which was played in the right manner from start to finish.
