Champions’ shock defeat in thriller

Glasson caused a big upset in last night’s Cumberland League division one clashes, as they defeated town rivals and current champions Ellenborough.

Glasson used home advantage to full effect as they held an 8-6 lead at half-time and kept the two-point advantage until the end, winning 12-10.

Ryan Pattinson, Matthew Johnson and James Moore were the try scorers for the victorious Glasson side.

Ellenborough replied with tries for Dean Scholey and Stephen Stoddart, the latter also adding one goal.

In a night of close games Broughton Red Rose and Distington were locked at the break 6-6. But it was Broughton who had more fuel left in the tank to come home 18-10 victors.

Richard Harrington, Matthew Woodcock and Brett Hill all crossed the line for the home side, with Mark Walker tagging on three goals.

Distington had tries from Nicky Burgess and Scott George, who also landed one penalty goal.

The last match to be played was at Maryport where they saw off the challenge of newly promoted Cockermouth to win 24-16.

Former Cockermouth player/coach Craig Fisher kicked four goals against his old club to help the Maryport cause.

Jonathan Dawes, Andrew Cartwright, Michael McMullen and Daniel Rooney were also on the scoresheet with a try apiece.

Cockermouth’s points came courtesy of tries for Mark McMillin, Matthew Nawrockyj and Liam Wild with a goal apiece for Richard McMillin and Ian McDowell.

Clashes at Seaton, where Kells were due to visit and Wath Brow, who were to host Hensingham, were both called off due to waterlogged pitches.
