Ormesher targets Haven debut

Trainee solicitor Steve Ormesher has laid down a personal challenge to earn a first-team place at Whitehaven before the end of the season after signing a short-term pro deal at the Recre.

The 30-year-old ex-Workington Town front-rower has agreed terms for the rest of the campaign following a successful four-match trial for the reserve-grade.

“I’ve never played in the First Division, and I thought it was a challenge for the rest of the season, to see if I could break in to the 17,” said the Wiganer, who realises he faces a stiff task with the likes of David Fatialofa, Karl Edmondson and Marc Jackson ahead of him in the pecking order.

“We are looking at Fats coming back, which makes the competition a lot harder, and the tried and tested Ryan McDonald, Karl and Jackson.

“I don’t think the collisions are as big as in NL2, because of the quick play-the-balls, but it’s a lot faster and you need to be a lot fitter.”

Boss Ged Stokes initially signed him for Town, where he made 16 appearances last term, scoring three tries.

He returned to NL2 Blackpool Panthers this year, but illness restricted him to just one appearance, against Leigh in the Northern Rail Cup.

The prop is also at home in the second-row, where he can utilise his surprising pace.

“I started off playing on the wing, and the arrogant side of me likes to think I could play anywhere, except six, seven or nine,” he added. “And even there I’d give it a try.”
