Kai Nugent was back in the Annan Athletic line-up as the Galabankies’ attempted great escape was checked by late drama.

The on-loan Carlisle United teenager was recalled to the XI by manager Peter Murphy for the trip to Montrose.

It was Nugent’s first start for three weeks as he made his 18th Scottish League One appearance.

The 19-year-old played the first 85 minutes as Lewis Hunter gave Murphy’s visitors the lead only to concede in the last minute to an Ali Shrive strike.

Second-bottom Annan, though, remain in touch with the sides above them after an improved run of form.

They are three unbeaten and have lost one in their last five to move to within three points of third-bottom Queen of the South.

Queens suffered a 4-1 defeat at home to leaders Falkirk with Blues loan defender Max Kilsby getting his latest outing.

Kilsby, 20, made his sixth appearance for the Doonhamers in the Palmerston Park clash.

But Falkirk proved too strong in Dumfries despite ex-Carlisle midfielder Josh Todd firing the hosts in front.

The visitors replied through a Callumn Morrison double and goals from Liam Henderson and Aidan Nesbitt, leaving Marvin Bartley’s Queens winless in seven.

United’s trio of youth team loanees – Aran Fitzpatrick, Jake Allan and Sam Hetherington – did not have a game for Workington Reds this weekend. Fitzpatrick played for the Blues’ Under-18s in their 2-1 win over Oldham Athletic in which Anton Dudik scored both goals.

Another Blues youth player – goalkeeper Jacob Barry – impressed for Carlisle City in their latest Northern League Division One outing.

Barry, on a work experience loan, started in goal for Jim Nichols’ side at Birtley Town.

And the teenager produced some good saves to keep the hosts at bay as City claimed an impressive 2-1 win.

Former United youngster Dan Hill struck both goals as Nichols’ ninth-placed side came from behind in the north east.

A host of other ex-Blues were in the thick of the weekend action, meanwhile.

In League One, Owen Moxon’s latest start came in Portsmouth’s 1-0 win at Peterborough United which kept Pompey five points clear at the top.

League Two saw Andy Cook hit a slim consolation goal as Bradford City were thrashed 5-1 at home by leaders Mansfield Town.

In the National League, Tristan Abrahams scored Maidenhead United’s goal in their 4-1 defeat at the hands of Dagenham & Redbridge.

Chris Beech’s AFC Fylde side came unstuck at home with a 2-1 defeat to Wealdstone.

In the Premier League, meanwhile, James Trafford’s ever-present run in Burnley’s goal came to an end as Arijanet Muric was handed a start by Vincent Kompany for the 2-1 win over Brentford.

National League North saw Cameron Salkeld hit the only goal for Darlington in their 1-0 win over Peterborough Sports.

Richie Bennett, in the same division, was on target for Southport in their 3-2 home defeat to Blyth Spartans.

In National League South there was a second red card of the season for Ryan Carr in Aveley’s 3-1 defeat at Farnborough.

David Amoo scored on his loan debut for Welling United as the Wings claimed a 3-1 home victory over Weston-super-Mare.

In the Northern Premier League Premier Division, Nathan Thomas struck Whitby Town’s goal in their 1-1 draw with Bradford Park Avenue.

In Northern League Division One, Jason Blackburn missed a penalty for Guisborough Town in their 1-1 draw with Seaham Red Star.
