It’s not very often I fall for a pop star, but this time I’m well and truly smitten. Oh Lady Gaga, you massive freak, how did you ever get so famous?

To be fair to the mainstream hit machine, she’s actually your standard-issue skinny blonde girl. Her songs, it’s true, are instantly accessible and slightly less deep than a two pence piece, even if she does write them herself.

But pop has always been about more than music, as we’ve seen from her ridiculous outfits. Giant shoulder pads that stack up to your ears? Lace dresses that cover your face but leave your bosom on display? Don’t forget the two-foot crown.

It’s not that she always looks good. Sometimes she looks great, but more often than not she’s fairly alarming, especially when you watch her on stage. Never have I seen a more angular, awkward, contorted performer – I couldn’t take my eyes off her.

Now, Lady G is an attractive young woman, but that certainly isn’t what you notice first. Compare that to someone like Cheryl Cole. She’s beautiful, sure, and she scrubs up very nicely when warbling her ultra-bland love songs.

But Gaga’s the one making progress for female musicians, by showing that girls can be more than just sexy. They can also be weird.
