Every second counts for emergency ambulances

Mr Bain may have been disturbed by ambulance sirens sirens at 5am (News&Star, January 26).

However, I too live in the Newtown Road locality and in the urgency of attending an incident with recent horrendous winter weather they may have more important thoughts than switching off a siren.

It does though seem to be automatically on at some odd times.

I frequently walk near the ambulance station exit routes and it is terrible that so many motorists don’t leave a gap to move aside for 999 crews.

Perhaps what’s needed is new technology with brighter 100 LED lights, louder sirens or computer technology on vehicle GPS systems, in the meantime it sounds like earplugs.

I remember my teenage days of occasional emergency fire/ambulance vehicles having clanging polished bells (before sirens) and being thankful for the driver’s skill at getting me to the Cumberland Infirmary operating theatre – seconds count and can be lost switching such items on/off.
