Sad passing of a champion

LIKE many in Carlisle, I was saddened to hear of the passing of Harry Clarke.
Every community needs its champions. Champions who bring prosperity, education, cultural enjoyment and most important of all, those who champion the vulnerable.
From his youth in the 1930s’ Jarrow, the time of the great depression years, Harry always fought for the vulnerable. Whether old or young, or discriminated against because of race, Harry was their champion.
To meet him, as I was privileged to do, was to meet someone with human kindness at its best. He cared for the young who lacked the privileges and opportunities that would make them blossom. He fought for the old who were neglected and unsupported. He stood by those who suffered racial discrimination.
His example should be marked and remembered by all in our community.
