A GROUNDBREAKING programme testing and rating the safety of motorcycle helmets has produced its first results.
SHARP – the Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme – was set up by the Department of Transport last November.
It has tested around 60 of the most popular full face helmets on the market and awarded ratings of between one and five stars.
The results out this month show safety performance can vary by as much as 70 per cent.
Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick said: “Motorcyclists account for just one percent of all road traffic, but for 19 per cent of all those killed on our roads.
“But if all riders wore the safest helmets available, 50 lives could be saved each year.”
