Headlamp’s green light

A LOW beam headlamp which automatically switches on in daytime is to become compulsory on new types of vehicle.

The safety device, designed to make vehicles more visible, will be introduced in European member states from 2011.
Sweden, where winter light levels are generally low even during the day, brought in daylight running lamps about 30 years ago.
Carlisle MP Eric Martlew asked Parliament last week if they would be made compulsory for all vehicles, and Transport Minister Jim Fitzpatrick said: “It will apply to new vehicle types, not to existing vehicles or new vehicles built under existing approvals.”
