WHITEHAVEN Coastguard has conducted another training session this week.

The rope rescue session focused on a casualty who had gone over the Slag Banks at Harrington Marina.

The team explains that the same setup can be used with the tall sandstone cliffs in the area and also the lower cliffs that were used in this practice session.

A spokesperson said: "Upon arrival, we assessed the situation and decided on our approach. One of our Rescue Technicians descended the cliff, accompanied by a second team member focused on casualty care.

"In real-life situations, this second person could be anyone who requires scene access, be it a paramedic, police officer, veterinarian, or counter-pollution officer from MCGA.

"Once our rope technicians descended the cliff, they packaged the casualty onto the rope rescue stretcher, preparing for the ascent to hand the casualty over to the next phase of care.

"During the training session, a member of the public captured aerial photos of our team in action using a drone.

"These photos showcase the various elements of our operation: the rescue technicians descending the cliff, the edge safety officers ensuring safety at the scene, the clifftop rope operators managing the descent and ascent, and the officer in charge (OIC) overseeing the entire operation.

"It's crucial to recognise the hazards posed by the cliffs/banks along the Cumbrian Coast.

"Our team stands ready to execute rope rescues promptly and effectively whenever and wherever they're needed.

"If you or someone you know, including pets, encounter a precarious situation, please don't hesitate to contact the Coastguard on 999. Your safety on the coast is our priority and attempting risky self-rescues can endanger lives."

They added: "From rope rescue (cliff/structure/vessel access), water rescue, mud rescue, casualty evacuation, vessels in distress, lost and missing person searches, suspicious items (ordnance/pyrotechnics), royal fish (whales, sturgeons, porpoises, and dolphins), then we’ve got you covered should you need us."
