Year 6 pupils from Cumwhinton School are gaining firsthand experience working in Carlisle's historic Rose Castle.

The opportunity, facilitated by the Lakes District Hospitality Association, comes in response to the hospitality sector's need for new recruits post-COVID.

Participating twice every half-term, the children are learning the ropes in various jobs within the castle.

The former dwelling of Carlisle’s Bishops, Rose Castle, has undergone an £8 million renovation and currently serves as an exotic events and accommodation venue.

Jon Stewart, the school's headteacher, said: "So far our pupils have worked with the castle's executive chef in the castle's kitchen to make cakes and biscuits.

"A group has worked with the room design team to learn all about interior design and setting a room for guests.

"During the Summer term, the children will work with the grounds and maintenance teams.

"All these experiences are completed with the backdrop of a historical building that has been central to Carlisle's history over several centuries," he said.
