Four teenage boys have been bailed with conditions following reports of an alleged hate crime on a black schoolboy in Carlisle.

It comes after a video circulated on social media that appeared to show the student being assaulted by a white teen before being made to kiss his shoes in the Upperby area of Carlisle on Friday (March, 15).

One teen was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated actual bodily harm.

The other three were arrested on suspicion of abetting racially aggravated actual bodily harm.

As a response, increased patrols have been launched in Carlisle

Temporary superintendent Gill Cherry said: “We’d like to reassure the community we continue to take this incident extremely seriously. We understand an incident like this can be concerning for many and has caused shock to anyone viewing the images circulating online.

“Our officers worked through the night and conducted fast-paced enquiries, resulting in four arrests.

“Additional patrols have been deployed over the weekend and we will continue to engage with key community stakeholders.”

Investigations are continuing.
