Brampton breeder marks 'special' 10th Crufts with award wins

Janice Cumberland, who is originally from Doncaster but now lives in Low Row, Brampton, first started competing at Crufts in 2014, with Crufts 2024 marking a decade of showing.

Nola, Roly, Ana, Reba, Beth, Jenny, and Toby all went to Crufts 2024 (Image: Posh Paws Haltwhistle)The iconic event took place at Birmingham's NEC between Thursday, March 7, and Sunday, March 9, with Janice and her daughters Rachel 23, Lucy 21, and Chloe 18 competing across the weekend and scooping several green rosettes.

These included being shortlisted in the Mini Dachshund breeders competition while dogs Roly and Beth, in her debut year, were awarded fourth place in the veteran dog and junior bitch categories respectively.

Janice's eldest daughter Rachel was also awarded fourth place in the 18-24 young handlers competition.

Rachel Cumberland with Beth and Roly (Image: Supplied)"It was an honour to get recognised as one of the top eight breeders in the country, especially when there are 41 breeders that qualify so that was special," Janice said.

"As for Roly and Beth, any place in the competition where there are 200 entered is fantastic.

"We are hoping that next year we can maybe go that one step further and get a place."

Despite the flurry of accolades, Janice explained how Crufts 2024 was made extra 'special' by the time she was able to spend with her daughters at the competition. 

She said: "It did feel a bit more special, it was a bit poignant as well because now my girls are getting a bit older and starting to do their own thing.

"My youngest daughter is off to America in the summer and then she is planning to do some traveling so there is a chance she might not be there next year.

Janice and her daughters also took part in the Royal Canin Discover Dogs Day on Saturday, March 9 where the public are given the chance to meet over 200 breeds of pedigree dogs, with Janice's seven Dachshunds proving especially popular.

She said: "It was non-stop from start to finish and it was exhausting but it is a good exhausting because it was just so much fun. We all get so much out of it.

"The dogs really enjoy it, especially Saturday when we were doing the Discover Dogs stand and the dogs just love all the attention and the petting, everybody loves the Dachshunds."
