SOLIDARITY will be shown to the people of Gaza today (October 14) in Carlisle's City Centre.

Carlisle's Palestine Solidarity Group will be meeting in the town centre at 1pm for a silent vigil.

Attendees are being reminded that banners to be brought 'are in line with calls for peace', across both nations.

"As the lights go out in Gaza, and troops amass on the border, we will take a stand in solidarity with the people of Gaza who will pay the price for Hamas' violent attacks on innocent Israelis.

"We will call for de-escalation of tensions, a halt to violence, a move towards a just peace.

"This will be a silent event, however, attendees will be available to discuss issues with those who require clarity.

"Please ensure that any banners or signs are in line with calls for peace and solidarity and do not cause distress to those also grieving deaths in Israel."

Organiser, Fiona Goldie said: "We are so very frightened for the people of Gaza. We fear death on a scale that has been hitherto unimaginable.

"Our event is intended as a space for people who hope for a peaceful solution to come together in solidarity with those in Gaza, who have already suffered enough. We desire de-escalation, negotiation, adherence to international law."

In a post on social media, Cumbria Police said: "As a Constabulary we are watching the developing situation in Israel and Gaza.

"We recognise that there will be many people who are affected.

"We are increasing patrols within our local communities and are engaging with community groups and partners.

"We have zero tolerance for any hate crime.

"If you have been victim to a hate crime or witnessed a hate crime, please report this to us.
