THE best friend of a Maryport mum killed after a car smashed into a wall at Flimby today paid tribute to her outgoing and loving personality.
Dozens of floral tributes lay at the scene on the A596 road where popular Jacqueline Glencross died on Saturday morning, one of which described her as “an angel”.
The 36-year-old mum-of-two was travelling in a silver Vauxhall Astra which left the main road and ploughed into a wall. Also in the car was a 43-year-old man from the Salterbeck area of Workington, who sustained serious injuries.
He was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital at Whitehaven and transferred to Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary, where his condition was this morning understood to remain serious but stable.
Ms Glencross’ best friend of 25 years, Nicola Kerr, today led the tributes to her. She said: “I have known her since school, we went to Netherhall together.
“She was always the centre of attention and the heart of the party.
“She had lots of friends, she was easy to get along with. She was a blonde bombshell and bubbly, she loved dancing. Her and her daughter were inseparable. She said: “I found out about it on Saturday. I was shocked.
“A lot of people in the town knew her, she will be missed. There will be a lot of people at her funeral.”
A statement from her family said: “Jacqueline devoted her life to her two young children, Kieran, 12, and Sophie, nine.
"A much treasured daughter and sister for the 36 years of her life. She was a happy go lucky woman with many true friends. She will be sadly missed by all.”
Ms Glencross, who was also known as Jacqueline Wilson, worked at Maryport’s Spar store and lived at White Croft Court, Grasslot.
The accident happened on a sharp bend, near the A596 junction with Ryehill Road, at about 5.40am on Saturday.
The car was travelling from Workington towards Maryport when it hit the wall, which crumbled on impact.
Ms Glencross was pronounced dead at the scene where investigators spent hours trying to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Over the weekend friends and relatives flocked to the scene to pay their respects and leave floral tributes.
This morning there were nearly 30 bouquets on the roadside, many with personal messages to the well-known Maryport woman, described by one friend as a wonderful person with an infectious laugh.
One read: “Our Jacqueline, no more cuppas on a Friday. The crack won’t be the same. Will never forget you.” Another said: “To Jacky, miss you already. I always knew you were an angel.”
Friends said Ms Glencross was particularly close to her cousin Julie and the pair were always together. A tribute at the scene read: “To my darling cousin Jacqueline, you will always be in my heart. I love you so much, my friend, my soulmate.”
North and west Cumbria coroner John Taylor has been informed of the death and an inquest is expected to be opened today.
The accident closed the busy main road for almost five hours. Diversions were in place until 10.30am.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash or who may have seen the Vauxhall Astra prior to the accident to come forward. Investigators are particularly keen to speak to a two occupants of a red vehicle, who may have assisted at the scene. Contact Sergeant Paul Brown at Penrith on 0845 3300 247.
