Anti-racism group to step up campaigning

ANTI-RACISM campaigners in Carlisle are stepping up their efforts ahead of the city council elections on May 1.

Carlisle Against Racism members were out in force over Easter, staffing a stall at the continental market in English Street and staging a Rock Against Racism gig at the Source Café in Denton Holme.

Spokesman Brent Kennedy, said: “We have had a lot of interest. People have seen the banner and come over to us for a chat and some information.

“Carlisle Against Racism holds these stalls at all the major events and they are always really well supported. We have had an excellent first year and are already up to 100 members.”

He added: “This is all about the launch of a six-week campaign leading up to the local elections.

“People have told us that they are concerned about the racist propaganda that is being distributed in Carlisle. We want to campaign against racism and any racist parties that are involved in the elections.”

The Rock Against Racism gig on Saturday and Sunday night attracted 150 people.

Performers included Penrith band Sod’s Law, Tongue Tide from Barrow, Carlisle solo singer Jaca, plus Jada, Rob Heron, Emma Forman and the Gong Wong Community Disco Band.
