Fishing for trophies: Alastair Corps-Bell, who won several awards at the Disabled Anglers Association event, with organiser Jack Charlton, himself no stranger to sporting awards

He was among 36 adults and 16 youngsters who took part in an event organised by the Jack Charlton Disabled Anglers Association.

Alistair, from Longtown, won trophies for best wheelchair angler and the heaviest fish on a fly, and received his awards from the England soccer legend.

The competition was held at Bessy Beck Trout Fishery at Newbiggin-on-Lune, near Kirkby Stephen, thanks to the sponsorship of Brian Scowcroft of Kingmoor Park Properties.

Disabled anglers travelled from across the county to take part and there were teams competing from Eden Mencap and Carlisle Mencap.

Charlton, who won a World Cup winner’s medal in 1966 before going on to be a successful manager, said: “Bessy Beck is a good little fishery – it is ideally situated with round ponds that make it easier to keep an eye on everyone.

“A lot of work goes into the event and I thank everyone for their support.

“My job on the day is to show our competitors how to use the rods and how to make the best of their fishing,” he added.

Ian and Shelley Riddell, from Bessy Beck, worked closely with the organising committee which included former Carlisle mayor Alan Toole who is hopeful the event can be repeated next year.

They said: “We were really pleased to see Alistair Corps-Bell win awards at this event – he loves to fish here because he finds it very accessible for his wheelchair.

“We are also grateful to him for his advice on how we can make Bessy Beck even more accessible in the future. Fingers crossed that there is sufficient sponsorship for the event to go ahead again next year.”

Anyone interested in sponsoring the event should contact Alan Toole on 07966 641376.
