Golden days on silver screens of Carlisle
Last updated 09:27, Saturday, 23 August 2008
Today Timeline looks at three of the smaller Carlisle cinemas that once created entertainment for filmgoers in the city – now no longer in existence.
The Rex cinema, formerly the Star Hall, in Denton Street was fitted with sound equipment in 1930 and by 1938 the cinema became known as The Rex.
In the 1960s bingo was becoming a favourite pastime with the people of Carlisle. The Rex became more of a social club where people could enjoy a game of bingo, although some films were still shown.
Unfortunately, the cinema closed in 1970 as the popularity of the bingo kept increasing.
The Stanley Hall on Botchergate was built in 1906 and was used as a skating rink and a dance hall before it began showing films around 1910 which continued until it closed on January 3 1959.
It continued as a dance hall but was eventually converted into The Stanley Hall flats.
Originally a chapel building, The Regal Cinema on Caldewgate opened in 1930, around the same time as The Rex.
Its fate, like The Rex, came in the mid 1960s when it too was converted into a bingo hall.
