CONGRATULATIONS to the team from Carlisle catering college who won this year’s Nestlé Toque d’Or competition – a hard-fought and high class tournament to find the country’s best brigade of young chefs.
It is the third appearance in the finals for Carlisle and the second time the college has claimed the title under the guidance of chef/lecturer Andy Stacey.
The grand finals were held at the BBC Good Food Show in June, but the award was announced at a special meal at London’s Dorchester hotel recently.
Nick Deeble, who is at Farlam Hall, near Brampton, led the team and admitted it took a while to realise the achievement: “It seems as though we have been doing the Toque for so long, it took a couple of days to sink in.
“It was a great performance by the team and one the day we absolutely nailed it and did 89 covers.
“It is great for us and the lecturers, I’m sure Andy will be looking for his hat-trick of titles and I’m sure he will get it.”
Nick’s original career plan of travelling across the Canada has been scrapped.
“When I saw the kitchens of the Dorchester it was love at first sight and I want that to be my next step,” he admitted.
