Hazel Thompson: A finalist in the AA Friendliest Landlady of the Year competition

Hazel, who owns a Lorton bed and breakfast business, is one of 20 finalists in the AA’s friendliest landlady competition.

She is the only person from Cumbria nominated and has managed to get to the final from an original list of 2,000 nominees.

Hazel, 46, who owns New House Farm Bed and Breakfast, in the Lorton Valley, said: “I am naturally very pleased with the nomination, but had no idea about it. I must have had a lot of people writing in putting me forward for the award.

“It has been a lot of hard work but you have got to enjoy your job. I hope this has shown through to the people who have stayed here.”

Mrs Thompson has been running the bed and breakfast for 19 years and said it was something that she had taken over from her parents.

She said: “My parents ran the Scale Hill Hotel just down the road and I originally worked for them.

“When they retired I had to look for something on my own. I found this place and it has really just grown from there.”

The awards ceremony will take place in London but Mrs Thompson has not been given a date yet.

She has had the judges to stay and do an inspection and has had to write in explaining why she should be chosen.

She also runs the Cow Byres tea shop, which provides lunches and teas.
