THE Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra is joined by their new dynamic and exciting music director, Vasily Petrenko, for their performance at The Sands Centre tomorrow night.
The first half of the programme includes Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.1 with soloist Paul Lewis, one of the most talented of young British pianists. In the second half the orchestra will play Brahms’ Symphony No.4 with its mighty last movement, passacaglia.
Conductor Vasily Petrenko was Gramophone Young Artist of the Year 2007. Between 1994 and 1997, he was resident conductor at the St Petersburg State Opera. He has conducted many key orchestras in Russia including the St Petersburg Philharmonic and the Moscow Philharmonic. In the 2007-08 season he made his debut with the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and returned to the Rotterdam Philharmonic. In August 2008 he made his BBC Proms debut with ‘the Phil’ and toured with the European Union Youth Orchestra. Soloist Paul Lewis was selected for the BBC’s inaugural New Generation artist scheme and appears regularly at the Proms and at the Cheltenham and Edinburgh Festivals. Starts 7.30pm. Tickets £25.50- £27.50 available from www.thesandscentre.co.uk, by calling 01228 625222 or 08448 472276.
