Cream of the cornet players

BRASS enthusiasts will be flocking to Whitehaven Civic Hall next month to hear world-famous cornet player Roger Webster perform.

He has been invited to the county by Dearham Band who are to hold their annual concert at the Civic on Friday, November 28.

“We are delighted and very excited that world class soloist Roger will be joining us on the stage. It is quite a coup to get him,’’ said Dearham Band’s Laurie Price of Whitehaven.

Roger, a virtuosi musician, is principal cornet with Grimethorpe Colliery Band and specialises on cornet, trumpet and flugel horn.

“Dearham Band members, who will accompany Roger under the musical direction of Gary Williams have made remarkable progress and are looking forward to the opportunity of working with such a fine instrumentalist,’’ said Laurie.

Doncaster-born cornetist Roger, 48, is also a psychologist and teaches performance at the Royal Northern College of Music as well a weekly lecture on psychology. Before becoming a professional musician, he worked down the coal mines and prior to that as a lab technician. It wasn’t until 1988 that he began to turn his hobby into a job and joined Black Dyke, one of the world’s greatest brass bands, as principal cornet.

Yes, young minds need to be stimulated to encourage a love of learning.

No, I had to put up with lessons that make you go to sleep - so kids these days should too.

Haven't they got more important things to do?
