Organisers on the lookout for touch teams

A SERIES of touch rugby events are being planned in north Cumbria.

The first of four tournaments, sponsored by Williams and Airey family solicitors, takes place on Saturday at Penrith Rugby Club. The other events are at Carlisle RUFC and Creighton, finishing at Upper Eden on August 2.

Touch rugby is used by a variety of other sportsmen to sharpen them up for their own game.

The England cricket squad use it as a training diversion and tennis players were spotted playing at Wimbledon. In New Zealand it’s common-place for parents to join in with their children.

Nigel Beaty, the community rugby sports coach for Eden, said: “We have had interest from existing players, school reunion teams, business teams, schools, ladies, dads and lads so it should be fun. There will be some free drinks and barbecue available at all the clubs.”
