Reds target Novak heads Down Under

SUMMER target Lee Novak is off Workington Reds’ radar, for the moment at least, after opting for a stretch Down Under.
The teenage striker was Newcastle Blue Star’s top scorer last term with 22 goals, and Reds boss Darren Edmondson had been tracking him keenly.
“He’s playing in the Australian league for three or four months, so he definitely won’t be coming here at the moment,” said Edmondson.
“But Lee’s a decent footballer, and we are still watching for when he returns home. I’m told that will be at the end of September.”
Reds could face competition for his signature in the autumn, however, as Preston North End are also thought to have expressed an interest.
Former Carlisle United apprentice James Earl, who can play midfield/right-back, has joined Reds for pre-season training. And Lancaster-based former Northern Ireland Under-21 international Ryan Zico Black has also been invited to attend this week.
“Ryan rang me and he’s keen to get back to this level,” added Edmondson. “I’ve left it in his hands. We know he has ability, and all I can do is give him the opportunity.
“He came training with us a couple of times last year, but I couldn’t give him anything concrete at the time.”
Edmondson launched pre-season training last week and reckons his squad have kept in shape over the close-season.
“The majority of them are aged under 24, and I’m quite chuffed how fit they are,” he said.
The veteran ex-Carlisle United defender, who focused on his managerial role for much of the second half of last season, has joined in training with his young squad, though his appearances are likely to be strictly rationed next term.
