Blacklock and Dobson closing on Town first team

Two of Workington Town’s home-grown young guns are closing in on prized first-team places, boss Dave Rotheram revealed.

Props Neil Blacklock and Peter Dobson have both impressed for Town’s reserve-grade this season, and Blacklock was 18th man for Sunday’s first-team clash with Blackpool.

“With Taani Lavulavu injured, we are down to four props, and these two are the next cabs off the rank,” Rotheram said.

“They are two young props who came through the reserve team last year and are doing well.

“Over the last month, Neil has continued to catch the eye with the little things he does well. His tackle technique is excellent, and Peter Dobson carries the ball strongly.”

Blacklock signed a two-year pro deal with Town in December, after being named clubman of the year at the Academy side’s awards night.

He originally played amateur rugby for Salterbeck and was recommended to Town by Storm coach Vince McNicholas.

Dobson joined the club from Glasson Rangers in May last year and has already enjoyed a brief taste of first-team action.

Meanwhile, loose-forward Rob Lunt has been advised that only a complete break from the game will cure his long-term back problem.

“A back specialist has told him that an operation won’t help,” Rotheram said. “A log period of rest has been advised.”
