And Vinegar Vera’s chips to soak up the beer...

THE closure of one of Carlisle’s most famous night-clubs of the Seventies, The Twisted Wheel, has revived many memories.

Robin Holliday of Carlisle sent in this brilliant picture taken at The Wheel, he thinks, one Christmas around the mid-Seventies. It was a jam session for an appeal, promoted by Andy Park.

He was able to name some of the people in the photo. The DJ Feds (fourth from right) and Dave Wilson, Brian Ward, Rob Holliday and Tony Johnstone from Dirty Dick, Brian Lorrimer and Rob Lowther from Jim Henshaw’s group possibly Bandstand, and roadies Billy Irving and Joe.

That’s a good start – let’s see if we can name everyone.

A work colleague (who wishes to remain anonymous) summed up her memories of The Wheel: “I spent many a Wednesday evening in the Wheel with my friend.

“We started off the night at The Kings Head, then moved to The Sportsman before queuing to get into The Wheel when it opened at 9pm. I doubt that happens nowadays – my daughter very rarely ventures out to clubs before 11pm.

“Wednesday night was free admission for ladies up until 10pm. Drinks were two for the price of one between 9-10pm. We used to buy our drinks and line them up on the table for the night.

“There was no worry of spiking in those days.

“Other memories are the sticky carpets, murals on the walls of Charlie Chaplin, dwarfs from Snow White (very bizarre for a nightclub), Feds the DJ, and Vinegar Vera’s for chips to soak up the drink. Happy days.”

I see now why she wanted to remain anonymous!
