Town and Reds close in on stadium decision

Fans of Workington Town and Reds could be only weeks away from finally learning if they are to share a new multi-million pound super stadium.

The news that the long-running saga over whether Allerdale Council ploughs cash in to a massive single development at Derwent Park or opts for two small projects focusing on the RL stadium and Reds’ Borough Park, is almost at an end will come as a relief to supporters.

Charles Holmes, Allerdale’s head of regeneration, revealed: “We are currently in the process of preparing a wide-ranging report, which will be submitted to a future meeting of the Derwent Valley Task Group. It is expected that this meeting will be held next month.

“We are currently in the process of assessing the results of the detailed site investigation works which will be an important aspect of the report.

“Once that information has been assessed, the members of the task group will then make a decision to support investment into either a combined leisure centre and stadium development or a separate leisure centre, with refurbishment of the existing football stadium and rugby stadium.”

Reds vehemently oppose the single-site option at Derwent Park, and say they will not move under any circumstances, while Town favour the proposal, which would potentially secure a Super League-standard facility for the club.

Town chairman Dave Bowden said: “The process has been thorough, which is good for all parties.

“The only problem is the time it has taken, but it’s wide-ranging. It’s important that everything is considered properly, and we await the outcome.”
