Stoney stars as Tigers lose out to Brummies

CARL Stonehewer top-scored as a guest for Glasgow Tigers when they lost 52-40 at Birmingham Brummies last night.

The Workington Comets star – who had also guested for the Tigers on Sunday – was kept busy as he was given six races. He only won one of them, but scored four points for earning a second place going in as a tactical substitute off 15 metre handicap and was put into the nominated riders race at the end, earning the Tigers point in a 5-1 to the Brummies.

Stonehewer finished with 14 points and really he and Ross Brady (13), along with Robert Ksiezak (9), carried the Glasgow effort.

Jason Lyons, recovered from injury, scored a five-ride 15 point maximum for the Brummies who have now dispensed with the services of former Comet Mattia Carpanese who scored only four points from 11 rides.

Stonehewer will be back at Derwent Park on Saturday night when the Comets entertain Scunthorpe Scorpions, the Premier League’s newest club.

They beat the Comets 47-43 last Friday and will be without heat leader Richard Hall who is taking part in a qualifying heat for the World Longtrack Championship.

In his place Scunthorpe have booked Joel Parsons, a rider who has had his brushes with the Workington fans in recent years because of incidents on the track. Parson comes in at No 5 for Hall who scored nine points for the Scorpions in their home win last Friday.

Other than the absent Hall, Scunthorpe will be unchanged but Workington will have to use rider replacement at number two for the seriously injured Barry Burchatt. It mans Stonehewer and the two reserves can take his programmed rides.

After June 1, when Workington will move Joe Haines up to number four, he will be included in the rider replacement facility along with Charles Wright and John Branney.

Workington expect to have number one Daniel Nermark back in the line-up on Saturday after the week-end furore when he rode in Poland but not at Derwent Park.

He has since ridden in Sweden on Tuesday night and is due to ride again their on Thursday night. He will be speaking to Workington team manager Ian Thomas afterwards.
