Wigton’s Varty on song as Hayton takes 8-35

THERE were four centuries, some brilliant bowling performances and 20 knocks above 50 on week three of the Eden Valley Cricket League at the weekend.
Wigton ace Stuart Varty was on top form for both the club’s second and third sides, hitting 118 against Penrith Academy and 87 against Denton Holme.
Varty’s century helped the Thirds beat the Academy by 139 runs, as Nick Hayton took an amazing EIGHT wickets for 35 runs and Mark Evans pitched in with a further 56.
His knock of 87 helped the Seconds to a winning draw over Denton Holme.
Wigton posted a 255 for seven target, Mark Gillespie also hitting 54, before the visitors clung on to their last wicket to finish on 182 for nine, G Faulder hitting 68.
In the Premier, Carlisle Seconds all-rounder Nick Whitfield hit an unbeaten knock of 109 and took five wickets for 45 runs as his side beat Appleby Seconds by five wickets.
The hosts had posted a 212 target, Terry Askew hitting 80 and Colin Westgarth 63, before Carlisle won through with three overs left.
Caldbeck batsman Steve Watson smashed an unbeaten knock of 111 past Edenhall - but he had to settle for a winning draw. Caldbeck posted a 249 for five target before the visitors replied with a steady innings to end on 134 for five.
John Reynolds hit a century for Baggrow Seconds as they thrashed Irthing Vale Seconds by 185 runs.
Baggrow posted a formidable 267 for eight target, S Simpson taking five wickets for 47 runs for Vale, before they were dismissed for just 82 in 27 overs.
It was a welcome victory for Baggrow, who were well beaten away at Rockcliffe the day before.
Rockcliffe batsman William Wharton hit 89 as his side romped to a 119-run victory. They posted a 253 for seven target before bowling the visitors all-out for 134 in 37.2 overs, Gary Stewardson scoring 64.
In Division Three, Lanercost Seconds batsman C Vever hit 86 but still ended up on the losing side against Stainton Seconds.
Stainton bowled Lanercost all-out for 155 in 31 overs before winning by six wickets in 24 overs.Irthing Vale Firsts pair Duncan Miller and Alan Matthews hit 84 not-out and 71 not-out respectively to help their side to a six-wicket win away at Penrith Wanderers.
Wanderers set a 216 for seven target before Vale won in 33.1 overs. Staffield pair Steve Thomlinson and Nicky Lane hit an unbeaten knock of 82 and 58 but had to settle for a winning draw over Braithwaite.
Staffield set a 207 for five target before the visitors clung on to end their innings on 145 for nine, Geoff Brown taking five wickets for 49 runs.
Penrith Seconds ace Terence O’Neil hit an unbeaten knock of 80 and fellow batsman Jonathan Osborne struck an unbeaten 51 as their side thrashed Scotby by 118 runs.
Lowther batsman G Cartmel scored 69 as his side recorded a winning draw over Edenside Seconds. Lowther set a 183 target before Edenside ended their innings on 147 for six.
Carleton stalwart Richard Bamber hit 68 against Kirkby Stephen but his side still ended up being beaten by seven wickets.
Bamber’s knock helped his side set a 183 for six target before the visitors won with four balls to spare, skipper Paul Thornborrow hitting 55 and Charles Bowman adding 53.
Shap batsman Lee Stockdale struck an unbeaten 66 as his side cruised to a comfortable seven-wicket win away at Gamblesby.
The hosts were dismissed for 101 in 31.1 overs before Shap confirmed victory in 20.3 overs.
Arthuret & Esk bowler Tony Steele recorded figures of 6-16 as his side beat Wetheral by 42 runs. A Oliver recorded figures of 5-23 in reply.
In the Premier Division, Nunwick beat Stainton Firsts, while in Division One, Baggrow beat Cockermouth Thirds by 108 runs and Cockermouth Seconds beat Culgaith by 57 runs.
While in Division Two, Patterdale recorded a winning draw over Great Corby.
