Ask the expert: I need help to look good on holiday
Last updated 03:52, Monday, 19 May 2008
Question: My summer holiday isn’t far off and I’d like to lose weight and tone up. How can I do this?
Answer: Many of us start some form of diet when we’re getting married, just after Christmas or before our beach holiday but often it is broken within days
Similarly some of us manage to persevere only to put the weight we lost back on.
The simple rule to losing weight is to follow a healthy diet to regulate your blood sugar and to participate in regular, varied exercise. The main points are:
n Meals need to be eaten regularly and on time to avoid going into a blood sugar low and to keep energy levels up. Don’t skip breakfast – this is the most important meal of the day.
n Eat foods which release their fuel slowly. These are principally fibre-rich carbohydrates such as fruit, vegetables, pulses, legumes and some grains such as rye and barley, along with proteins like grilled chicken and fish.
n Avoid eating refined carbohydrates like white rice, white bread and sugary cereals, processed foods, caffeine and other stimulants.
At Carlisle Pools we have a great weight management programme which encourages sensible eating with regular exercise. Our instructors will also help motivate you and ensure you achieve your goals.
We run a programme called Slim Fit that has a healthy eating plan which provides natural, slowly released energy. This means you avoid the sharp rise and fall of blood sugar levels and you keep feeling fuller for longer. When you control your blood sugar, you control your appetite.
Slim Fit is perfect to lose weight, improve fitness and tone up. Sessions take place at The Pools and the average weight loss for people who commit to the programme is 14lbs in six weeks.
As part of each session there is a weigh in and body fat measurements are taken so you can check your progress. We also share tips on exercise and living a healthy lifestyle.
The starter pack, which contains all the information you will need for the course costs £15 then each session is £3.90. Included in your session price is a voucher for 50% off any activity at The Pools to use as you please.
