Cleator set to take on Amateurs in final

THE Shipowners Charity Cup final will be played outside its North-East heartland for the first time in its 130-year history when Whitehaven Amateurs host Cleator Moor Celtic at their £1m County Ground home on Friday night (6.30pm).

It will also be the first time two Cumbrian sides have met in the final, and the Amateurs will be hoping to go one better than last season, when they were pipped 2-1 in extra-time by Wolviston.

Amateurs will know by then if they have earned promotion to the Northern League.

Jarrow, their rivals for the runners-up slot, must win at Annfield Plain on Wednesday night to finish second and deny the Cumbrians promotion.

“It’s going to be a long wait,” said Amateurs chairman Bill Robson. “If Jarrow don’t win on Wednesday we go up. It’s as simple as that.

“Annfield Plain have lost only twice at home in league and cup all season. If it doesn’t happen for us, we’ll try again next year,” he added.

“Now our ground developments have gone ahead, it’s quite important to us.

“It’s our ambition to get in to the Northern League and higher.”

Amateurs recently installed floodlights and two mini-stands, seating over 100, and now meet Northern League entry requirements.
