Workington Town have switched their forthcoming home clash with table-topping Doncaster to a Friday night and slashed prices in a bid to lure fresh fans to Derwent Park.

The NL2 match, planned for Sunday week, has been brought forward by two days, with a special drinks promotion thrown in.

Town have made a poor start to their League Two campaign, and home attendances have been low.

But is hoped that a switch of dates against Doncaster, coached by one of the sport’s biggest names, Ellery Hanley, left, could spark fresh interest.

The price of grandstand seats has been cut from £13 to £6, and it will cost just a fiver to stand, down from £11.

Town’s commercial director Kevin Moss hopes the promotion will revive interest in the team’s fortunes.

“We’ve had a disappointing start to the season, so we want to start again against Doncaster, and get as many people to come as possible, to be our 18th man,” he said.

“Ellery Hanley is probably one of the greatest players to pull on a Great Britain top. He’s a legend in his own right.

“A lot of young people will only have seen him on video, and this is their chance to see him in real life.

“Playing on a Friday night is a one-off, and we’re looking to test all the different options.

“If it works, and it encourages more people to come down, it’s something to look at for later in the season.”

Town’s first-team have no game this weekend, but the reserve-grade host Batley on Saturday (2.30pm).
